The traffic police in Colombo and in cities outside Colombo, for the most part, do an admirable job handling large volumes of traffic day in and day out with very little resources. CITY TRAFFIC POLICE
City Traffic Police is responsible for traffic policing in the Colombo city. The main task of the City Traffic Police is enforcement whist accidents are investigated by the traffic branches of the respective stations. Colombo Traffic Division is divided into three Districts - Colombo South, Colombo Central and Colombo North. They are supervised by three Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASP’s). There is a separate ASP for emergency work. A Senior Superintendent of Police is in charge of the City Traffic Division.
There are two Traffic Division in Western Province (North and South) for traffic enforcement and for road safety.
Enforcement:
The Traffic Police enforces the law to prevent traffic violations and road accidents and has in place special detection and surveillance teams, motorcycle patrols and night operation units deployed to detect the following offenders -
1. Excessive speeding
2. Driving under the influence of liquor
3. Dangerous driving, reckless driving, Improper overtaking (passing), driving without license or insurance etc
Enforcement is done in several ways via
1. Motor Cycle Patrols
2. Traffic Police officers working in groups
3. Traffic patrol cars in unmarked locations
4. Police Emergency service
5. Traffic Police officers are deployed at junctions to do point duties to control traffic congestion specially during peak hours.
